Meeting the hydrogen sector
Dear Commissioner,
First of all I would like to wish you a good start with this new Commission. The ambitious
targets that have been pronounced in the recent weeks will urge all of us to perform even better
than before. I am sure we can achieve that. We as the hydrogen sector are ready to support you in
this task.
Hydrogen Europe is the leading association on topics related to hydrogen technologies in the EU
comprising both industrial as well as research bodies. We are co-leading with the European
Commission the Fuel Cell Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), an Institutional Public Privat
Partnership. We gather more than 150 members from industry. Only in 2019 we welcomed 46
new members!
Our mission: No emission!
We would like to thank you and your services for the ongoing efforts to define and support a
hydrogen strategy for the EU. We see these kind of strategies being developed in many Member
States and we regard the coordinating role of the European Commission as crucial. The „Smart
Sector Integration Package“ will be an ideal approach to enhance the enabling role of hydrogen
for other sectors and industries, e.g. for the renewable energy sector.
The Executive Vice President of the Commission, Frans Timmermans addressed a few weeks
ago our annual gathering with some 400 participants by making a clear case to support hydrogen
technologies in order to accelerate the deep decarbonisation of the European economy. He called
this a “pivotal role for hydrogen” which has been reported broadly in the European media. Also
we welcome the activities of Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton to strengthen the industrial
dimension of hydrogen technologies, e.g. with the support for the hydrogen value chain via
IPCEIs (Important Projects of Common European Interest).
However, we need to make sure that DG ENER stays intensively involved at the core of this
development as it emerges with big steps right now, especially with regards to the different
activities under the „European Green Deal“.
In this spirit we are looking forward to the continuation of the close cooperation and we shall be
happy to inform you in detail about the progress we have made and we will make in the near
future.
We hope we can count on your ongoing interest in our sector and would be delighted to inform
you in person about the upcoming developments.

Best regards
