Subject:
Report - Meeting with a Norwegian environmental NGO - palm oil + FTAs
Indonesia and Malaysia

On behalf of 4(1)(b)

On 23 May 2018 I met with 4(1)(b)
, a representative of Rainforest Foundation
Norway, a Norwegian environmental NGO. 4(1)(b)
 had requested the meeting for a
discussion on palm oil-related issues, at the occasion of her visit to Brussels (on May 24 she spoke in
an event hosted in the EP on palm oil in the recast on the Renewable Energy Directive).

Key points discussed:

- Palm oil: a key objective for Rainforest Foundation Norway is to ensure that palm oil is used only
in the food sector, and not for biofuels. The organisation has been working on this issue with the
Norwegian Parliament and with civil society organisations in Indonesia and Malaysia – but not (yet)
with EU civil society organisations;

- FTA negotiations with Indonesia and Malaysia: Rainforest Foundation Norway has not worked on
trade issues so far, but as the organisation is reflecting on whether to start doing so Ms Desjardins
expressed interest in getting a better understanding of EU trade policy. I gave a quick overview of
EU trade relations with Indonesia and Malaysia and of the ongoing SIA process.

Best regards,
