Dear-
We spoke on the phone late last week regarding an EFSA Opinion on the "risks to human health related
to presence of perfluoroalkyl substances in food", which was adopted in September. I mentioned a
letter sent by,__ _________ _.Government Affairs and Sustainability at 3M, to your Director
General which, as agreed, I hereby attach. The letter addressed

land EFSA. I also attach
and include below the follow up correspondence with SANTE officials regarding the
points raised.
As mentioned in our call, I would be grateful if a Webex/Zoom/Teams call could be scheduled (for one
hour in the afternoon CET) during the second half of January in order to discuss the points raised in the
attached letter as regards the EFSA Opinion. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Brussels

Dear
& All:
Apologies for my delayed feedback and we appreciate your sense of urgency.
This week is a pretty terrible week for a few of us as I would like to invite my colleagues
in copy.
I realize that it is a bit short for tomorrow – could we have several other slots if not Friday morning,
maybe next week?
Thank you for your cooperation & best regards,

Consequently, if possible, I would be delighted to have a call with you and provide you with a
candid feedback from a technology company providing diverse solutions to EU govts, industry
and citizens.
A summary on 3 areas of work with DG SANTE:
out of scope
out of scope
EFSA: I also wanted to bring your attention to a recent EFSA opinion establishing a Tolerable
Weekly Intake (TWI) for the presence of perfluoroalkyl substances in food. 3M scientist
colleagues have been perplexed that EFSA chose to ignore existing animal studies and to base a
TWI on a cross-sectional epidemiological study. 3M manufactures certain PFAS in Belgium &
Germany, and makes use of these substance in its production of materials, some which have
been vital during the COVID-19 pandemic such as surgical gowns, due to their contamination-
resistant properties. The proposed TWI is now so low that the EC will have to be careful not to
adopt risk management measures solely on the basis of that opinion if critical applications for
European society are to be maintained. Attached 3M explanatory letter to EC/you – we had
contacts some time ago with
– your advice for any follow up on
that specific matter would be welcome.
I hope these remarks will be of interest to you, and as mentioned, I am happy to have a follow
up call – please let me know your views.
Thank you for cooperation & best regards,
