European spend on data protection
Dear European Commission Data Protection Officer,
Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:
1) The amount spent by the European Union in relation to data protection across the Union, including on officers, staff, physical and soft copy storage of information.
2) The number of citizens within the EU about which data is held by the Union, as well as a breakdown of these figures on a per country basis.
3) What kind of data information does the EU hold on its citizens

Union, as well as a breakdown of these figures on a per country basis.
3) What kind of data information does the EU hold on its citizens?
Please note that the European Commission is not in possession of documents
containing information about the amount spent by the European Union in
relation to data protection across the Union. I don't think that such
document exist, but I suggest you contact the European Data Protection
Supervisor, who, in his capacity of supervisory authority for all EU
institutions and bodies, may have some global information on this

Secondly, I confirm that the European Commission is not in possession of
documents about the number of citizens about which data is held by the
Union, nor any breakdown of such figures on a per country basis. I would
like to add that the legitimacy of such a breakdown would be extremely
doubtful.
Concerning your last question, i.e. the kind of information that the
Commission hold on the citizens (I can only speak for the Commission, as I
don't have information about the other institutions of the EU); it depends
of course on the nature and purpose of the processing operation on
personal data. You can peruse the register of the data protection officer
of the Commission, which contains information about all the processing
operations on personal data under the Commission's responsibility,
including the description of the data or categories of data processed. The
register is accessible at

The register of the other institutions is in general also accessible on
line, or it can be inspected by any member of the public, either directly
or via the European Data Protection Supervisor.
