Dear Mr Reilly,

Following your request of 13 February under Regulation 1049 for access to
information on allowances or parliamentary expenses paid to Irish Members
of the European Parliament since 2009; attendance records of these
Members; transitional allowances and pension entitlements for these same
Members, we are now sending you the following documents:

- Statute for Members, or rules governing the mandate for Members of the
European Parliament, which entered into force on the first day of the 7th
parliamentary term beginning in 2009:
[1]http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexU...

According to these rules, all Members of the House are entitled to the
same salary, allowances and pension rights, independently of their
nationality. Major differences in expenditure per MEP result essentially
from travel expenses, due to the calculation on the basis of distance
between residence of MEPs and the official meeting places of the European
Parliament.

- At its meeting of 28 February 2008, the EP Bureau decided to publish
information on the different allowances to which all MEPs are entitled on
the EP website, following best practice requirements in national
parliaments. You can find details and amounts here:
[2]http://www.europarl.europa.eu/aboutparli...

Individual Members may, of course, decide whether they want to disclose
more information on their allowances than is required by Parliament's
rules.

There are currently 12 Irish MEPs, of which the newest Member arrived on
15 February 2012. You can find more information about them here:
[3]http://www.europarl.ie/view/en/Your_MEPs...

Three Irish MEPs have stepped down during the current mandate. At the end
of their term of office, all Members are entitled to a transitional
allowance, equivalent to their salary, which shall continue for one month
per year in which their mandate has been exercised, as stipulated in
Article 13 of the Statute for Members (see above).

- You can follow the voting records of Members, and their attendance rates
on the website of the independent organisation Votewatch. Please note that
this organisation in no way reflects the views or position of the
institution in any official manner:

I decided not to bother contacting the MEPs directly to ask about their expenses (in Irish journalism this tends to meet with a fairly short rebuttal!).

I had hoped the Parliament would have been able to respond directly with specific hard figures for the payments made to each of the MEPs concerned, rather than an abstract generic reply, but alas...
