Dear Ms. Bodkin,

Thank you very much for your message. With regards to your request for
information we would like to kindly inform you that:

1.)    The European Commission has in 2013 committed €350 million in
humanitarian assistance to respond to needs inside Syria and in the
neighbouring countries of Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq. The total
response in terms of humanitarian assistance from the European Commission
since the beginning of the crisis amounts to €515 million. Approximately
44.1% of the humanitarian assistance channelled through DG ECHO to UN
agencies, International Organisations and International Non-Governmental
Organisations goes to meet needs inside Syria whereas the rest goes to
operations in the neighbouring countries hosting large numbers of refugees
(Lebanon 25.9%, Jordan 22.6%, Iraq 4%, Turkey 3.4%).

The total EU budget to respond to recovery and relief efforts (including
humanitarian, economic, development and stabilisation assistance) inside
Syria and in the region as a direct response since the beginning of the
crisis currently stands at over €2 billion. This figure includes both the
funding mobilised by different instruments of the European Commission as
well as the humanitarian funding from Member States.

2.)    The EU humanitarian assistance channelled through DG ECHO primarily
supports shelter, distribution of basic non-food items (NFIs), the
provision of food and nutritional items, essential drugs, safe water,
sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and life-saving medical emergency responses
and protection to help the most vulnerable families (Internally Displaced
People, refugees, host communities).
