Statistics of application and success rate in the individual ERC programmes

Ihre Anfrage war teilweise erfolgreich.

Iesel Van der Plancken

Dear European Research Council Executive Agency,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

The ERCEA provides aggregated statistics on the success rate according to the applicants ages over all three categories (StG-CoG-AdG) (for instance in the 2017 annual report and presentations given by ERCEA representatives at NCP organised infosessions). This gives a blurred view, since categories tend to overlap due to the possible extensions of eligibility window for instance for female researchers with children. The statistics therefore not show what is the application and success rate for relatively young researchers (8 years after PhD) in the consolidator or (13-14 years after PhD) in the advanced grant category. We want to have an insight on whether it makes sense for these researchers to apply early on.

I'd therefore like to request:
For each category (StG/CoG/AdG/SyG) and (if possible) gender separately, the number of applicants and grantees per year after PhD at the time of application. If the data can be provided by call year, this would allow us to detect any evolution.
Thank you in advance
Yours faithfully,

Iesel Van der Plancken

Dear Ms Van der Plancken,

With regard to your request for information enclosed below, please find
the success rate of the ERC Starting (StG) and Consolidator (CoG) grant
applicants depending on the time that passed between their last PhD award
and the year of the application sorted by gender.

Please note that the eligibility window for the StG calls changed almost
every year between 2007 and 2013. It became stable over the period
2013-2020 once the CoG calls were introduced. The data is provided in
separate tables for more clarity.

Please also note that for the purposes of this analysis the “call year
minus 1” was used as a proxy for the “application year”.

This is a little problematic for the calls StG 2007-2013 for which the
eligibility window was calculated taking as a reference date the call
publication date, which was mid-year in July.

However, this might introduce a little imprecision concerning the success
rate in consecutive years, but not in the overall picture, i.e. the
success of less experienced vs more experienced applicants.

There is no problem for the ERC calls CoG2013 (publication date in
November 2012) and StG2014 and CoG2014 (publication date in December
2013). There is also no problem for the calls of 2015 and after, when the
reference date for the eligibility window became the 1st of January of the
call year.

Dear [email address],

Oh yes, now I see. The number of applications (see my original request) is however missing. Without it, it is difficult to see how common applying in a certain condition is. Is it possible to still add that?
Thank you!

Yours sincerely,

Iesel Van der Plancken

Dear Ms Van der Plancken,

Unfortunately, we cannot provide the requested information in terms of the
actual numbers of applicants and grantees by years after PhD and by call
in table format because the number of grantees in the youngest eligibility
category (in which you seem to be the most interested) is very small even
if we do not distinguish by gender. For privacy reasons, we do not give
detailed information regarding personal data if the numbers are small as
there is a risk for the data subjects to be identified.

However, we can provide the number of grantees and their success rate by
years from PhD and by call in chart format, which you can find in the
attachment. These charts cover the H2020 Starting and Consolidator calls.

Please note that in these charts the number of years from PhD is
calculated as the difference between the “date of PhD award” and the “call
publication date” for 2014 calls, respectively the “1^st of January of the
call year” for 2015 calls and after (unlike in the previous success-rate
analysis transmitted with the first response, where the “call year minus
1” was used as a proxy for the “application year” and the difference to
the PhD year was calculated, as explained at the time).

We hope that you will find this information useful. Please do not hesitate
to contact us should you have any further queries.

Dear ve_ercea.acctodoc (ERCEA),

Thank you for the additional information.
I was mostly interested in the succes rate of young AdG applicants, when they're no longer competing with their age peers, but you don't seem to be able to share this information?

Yours sincerely,

Dear Ms Van der Plancken,

With regard to your additional request of 26/3/2021, please note that
there are specific eligibility criteria only for Principal Investigators
applying to the ERC Starting or Consolidator Grants based on the date of
award of their first PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree). There are not
such specific criteria in case of ERC Advance grant applicants. Therefore,
we do not collect systematically the date of the PhD award from these
applicants and cannot provide information on the success rates of ERC
Advance grant applicants by academic age.
However, we could provide information regarding the success rates of ERC
Advance grant applicants by biological age, if this information is of
interest to you.

Kind regards,
