Meeting of Maria Asenius with the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) and Digital Europe –
29 January 2016

Participants:

ITI and Digital Europe: Dean Garfield,

COM: Maria Asenius, Nele Eichhorn,
ITI and Digital Europe are on a 9 days trip through Europe to speak to policy makers about the new Safe
Harbour negotiations. They argue that even the "smartest and most plugged-in" policy makers
sometimes underestimate the impact that this may have on the transatlantic trade relationship. Political
leadership is needed and trade officials should be involved in these discussions, also "beyond the first
goal line" of 2 February (deadline for the conclusion of a new safe harbour). They also emphasised that
fundamental values of data protection and shares across the Atlantic and that these values allow US
companies to succeed.
