C. Cloning
CAN/
is interested in knowing details of a timeline for COM’s cloning
proposal approval process. He noted that Canada is concerned that potential requirements
for clones and their progeny being discussed in the EU may not be science-based and
may have a negative impact on Canada-EU trade. While Canada presently required pre-
market assessment and approval for clones and their products, Canada is concerned at the
potential costs of a traceability system, particularly one that would include not just direct
progeny but also later descendants.
COM confirmed a meeting was held on November 27, 3013 but that no minutes are
available. At that meeting COM was asked to make a proposal. When that proposal is
available it will be notified. COM noted that because of Canada’s approval system, it is
not “the most difficult” trading partner, and expressed understanding of Canada`s
distinction between immediate progeny and later descendants.
