Open Source Intelligence in Law Enforcement 
Hands-on Workshop, 18.-20.09.2013, Ispra, Italy 
Event Summary 
The Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) in Law Enforcement Expert Forum took place, 18.-20.09.2013 in Ispra, 
Italy. The event was combined with the expert forum. To accommodate both hands-one and expert forum the 
overall event was extended to three days.  A large group of practitioners from various law enforcement 
authorities of European countries took part. The hands-on workshop was a good opportunity to teach the 
participants on how to use the OSINT tools shared by the JRC with the law enforcement community. The event 
was organised by the JRC in collaboration with DG HOME. 
Tool Tracks and Sessions 
EMM OSINT Suite 
The EMM OSINT Suite desktop toolkit is used to work through a series of sessions presenting the most 
important functions of the toolkit. 
Session C1: Data Acquisition 
How to acquire data from the web or from local disk. 
Session C2: Entity Extraction  
Using the built-in entity extraction engine to find entities. 
Session C3: Entity Extraction Advanced  
Customise the entity extraction tools to find custom entity types. 
Session C4: Reporting and Data Export 
Explains how to export data and how to write custom reports.

EMM NewsDesk / NewsBrief 
The tutorial for the EMM Server Platform (NewsDesk / NewsBrief) was split into two overall tracks: 
Track: EMM End-toEnd 
This track is aimed a participants with no previous experience in using tools of the EMM platform. The track 
contains a number of practical activities addressing the main concepts of the EMM platform. Participants are 
guided to browse the readily available information on the NewsBrief web frontend. Then, they will learn how to 
define EMM categories using the Category Editor. The categories are applied to the EMM platform and the 
results are analysed using NewsDesk. 
Track: EMM Coaching 
This track is aimed at participants with prior knowledge of the EMM platform tools. The participants work on 
case studies and get coached by EMM staff alongside.
