Subject: Indicators for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an EU
context (EU SDG indicator set)
As agreed upon in the Inter-Service Steering Group on the UN Sustainable Development Goals,
chaired by SG, and as implemented through its sub-working group on SDG related reporting,
Eurostat, in close cooperation with your DGs, has developed an EU SDG indicator set.
The indicator list is now publicly available
at: http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/sdi/overview.
The EU SDG indicator set delivers on the Communicati
on Next steps for a sustainable European
future - European action for sustainability of 22 November 2016. This Communication foresees a
regular monitoring of the SDGs in an EU context, and the development of a reference indicator
framework for that purpose.

As highlighted in the Inter-Service Steering Group on the UN Sustainable Development Goals,
the indicator set is the result of a broad, inclusive process, which apart from consultation within
the Commission also involved Council Committees (SPC, EMCO and EFC), the European
Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC), non-governmental organisations, academia and other
international organisations. It has been developed following strict principles of relevance and
quality requirements.
The online implementation of the indicator set, including the figures, is foreseen for November
2017, together with the publication of the first EU SDG monitoring report. Eurostat is currently
drafting the monitoring report and intends to consult other DGs in the second half of June through
the sub-working group on SDG related reporting and will regularly inform the Inter-Service
Steering Group on the UN Sustainable Development Goals on progress made. Six DGs have
committed to provide data for some indicators. These DGs are: JUST (for three indicators),
CLIMA, COMM, ENV and JRC (each for two indicators) and MOVE (one indicator).
A review of the indicator set is foreseen towards the end of the year. It will take into account
indicators from new data sources, which should become available over time.
We would like to thank you and your staff for your insightful and constructive inputs, which were
of great help in setting up the indicator set. We look forward to continuing our good cooperation
in the future.
