Dear
Our messages just crossed indeed and apologies but I have indeed been out of the office on
mission. It is a pity that the agendas can’t work for Davos indeed. We will register your
request for a meeting between
and EVP Timmermans and get back to you.
Kind regards,

Dear Mrs. Pineiro-Kruik and
,
I just noticed that your mail crossed mine – I see schedules have changed and a meeting in
Davos is not possible.
As you can understand, before the huge crucial carbon neutral investment decisions to
make in Europe and/or outside,
very much would like to meet EVP Timmermans,
in the near future.
Would you be able to help setting up such meeting or should I request this to another
person ?
Kind regards,

Dear Mrs. Pineiro-Kruik,
From the office of Mr. Samsom we understand you are dealing with the WEF Davos agenda
of EVP Timmermans and they advised me to contact you by email.
From our meeting with Mr Samsom last week we understand he would recommend a
meeting in Davos with
, the biggest steel company in the world
with headquarters in Luxemburg.
Steel is by far the biggest CO2 emitter of the industrial sector in Europe, so an effective
Green Deal on Steel would be key for the success of the overall Green Deal, lead by EVP
Timmermans. But for that huge investments are needed in Europe.
Subject of the meeting would therefore be how to make the revolutionary new investments
to reach climate targets and neutrality, with effective Carbon Border Adjustments – by
investing in the EU and not importing the steel.
I address you hereby by email as it was not possible by phone. Would you know if indeed
such a meeting in Davos is possible?
Kind regards,

with an effective Carbon Border Adjustment
Beste / Dear Mr. Samsom,
First of all, I would like to congratulate you with your appointment, which is
key for Europe's future.
As you may know, ArcelorMittal is Europe’s and the world's leading steel
company, with headquarters in Luxemburg. From the around 100.000 people
we directly employ in Europe, there are about 900 researchers, who develop
and implement our research & innovation all first in Europe. This has been
making us a global leader in material quality, recycling and CO2 technology,
for example regarding hydrogen based steel making in our Hamburg (D)
plant, and on Carbon Capture, Use & Storage in our Gent (B) and Dunkirk (F)
plants.
3
We would be honored if you would like to come one day and test our range
of new technologies at our best plant, in Gent, 1.5 hour drive from here,
once time allows.
We intend to keep this leadership of course, but there are major challenges
and decisions ahead related to our investments of existing and new
technologies in Europe. Policy can really make the difference to start making
the crucial business case for our low carbon transition, with continued
production and value chains inside Europe, avoiding carbon leakage and to
deal with the millions of tons of CO2 emissions that are already imported in
Europe indirectly in steel imports, produced much less CO2 efficiently and
from countries with much less ambitious or no real climate policy.
In this context, I hereby send you our Climate Action Report; we aim to go for
carbon neutrality by 2050 in the EU. Of course that is very ambitious given
our high emission profile and as we do not know all parameters, particularly
the coming crucial policy regarding carbon border adjustments.
We would like to discuss with you the required elements that can set the
business case for the Green Deal on Steel, with as crucial basis the main
effective design options for a Carbon Border Adjustment. This outcome of
the Green Deal Communication will influence the long-term planning for our
business and will hence be impacting already at short term decisions on our
installations and productions in Europe and the rest of the world.
This is why we would very much like to ask for a meeting with you and
, and myself. We hope this
can be possible during the preparation of the Green Deal preparations.
Met vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,
