Subject: WEF Davos ‐ ArcelorMittal meeting request
Dear Mrs.
,
I am contacting you regarding the meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos later this month; we
understand Commissioner Gentiloni will participate and that you coordinate this.
Mr. A. Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal Europe, will also participate and would very much like to set up a
meeting with Commissioner Gentiloni, particularly as he is leading on the Carbon Border Adjustments, which
is of strategic importance to investment decisions in Europe.
We are the leading steel company globally with headquarters in Europe, where we develop our leading
technologies on materials, circular economy and carbon reductions.
ArcelorMittal has just announced a commitment to go for 30% CO2 reduction by 2030 on the way to climate
neutrality in 2050, only in Europe. It is our ambition to be leading the carbon neutral technology
development with actual large scale investments. This indeed depends on an effective carbon border
adjustment that can be a basis for further ambition of Europe Green Deal.
As the steel industry is a third of all Europe’s industrial emissions, with ArcelolrMittal almost a third of that,
we realise this would not only be a radical high risk change for the steel industry, but also a cornerstone of
the Green Deal ambition and success. Hence it is key the policy design is the right one.

But to make this commitment and long‐term investment decisions in Europe a success in reality, we see,
however, an important concrete policy risk related to the actual business case of this investment and
transition; that would be key to discuss at the highest relevant level. This is why Mr. A. Mittal would very
much like to discuss with Commissioner Gentiloni.
Therefore, we very much hope you can support to set up such a meeting at the WEF in Davos. Could you
please let us know if this could be possible?
Kind regards,
