Subject: Eurometaux’s Position Paper “EU Due Diligence in Supply Chains” – Importance
of the forthcoming EU legislation for the Non-Ferrous Metals Industry
Dear Zaneta Vegnere and Andrea Beltramello,
Following the productive meeting held by Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis
and the non-ferrous metals industry on 4 February, I am contacting you on behalf of
Eurometaux (European metals association) in view of your responsibility in the Cabinet
for Conflict Minerals and Due Diligence.
Our sector shares a strong belief that responsible and ethical sourcing of metals and
minerals should be an essential part of EU policy.
Please find attached the metals industry’s official views on EU Due Diligence, in view of
the European Commission’s Sustainable Corporate Governance initiative you are working
on with colleagues for later in 2021, and ongoing work in the policy areas of Conflict
Minerals and Batteries.
Our membership has lead the way globally in setting-up OECD compliant due diligence
schemes to ensure responsible supply chains, with recent examples including the Cobalt
Industry Responsible Assessment Framework
and a Joint Due Diligence standard
introduced last week by the copper, nickel, lead and zinc industries. Our EU policy
recommendations build on this experience.
We would welcome the opportunity for a follow-up meeting with you directly, in order
to discuss our due diligence position in more detail and our recommendations for your
policy agenda. A Eurometaux representative would be joined by a set of due diligence
industry experts.
Thank you for your kind attention and consideration.
Best regards,
Eurometaux – European Metals Association
