Dear
I would like to thank you very much for your congratulations and best wishes in your letter of
10 December 2019.
In the last five years, I have seen how enforcing competition rules can make markets work for
people, not the other way round. I am proud of the work we have done, but there is still a lot
to do. So I am honoured that the President asked me to continue my work on competition and
assume a role of the Commission's Executive Vice-President for Europe fit for the Digital
Age.
We face great challenges ahead, like climate change, and the digital transformation, which
will affect every single part of our lives. However, we have what it takes to face those
challenges. Europe is filled with highly skilled people, we have excellent infrastructure, fair
and effective laws and the Single Market, which gives European businesses the room to grow
and innovate. However, as the world gets smaller and more connected, the global competition
gets tougher. To ensure that Europe's industrial strategy is green, fair and for everyone, we
will need to work harder than ever.
In this context, I am also committed to ensuring that our competition policy and rules are fit
for the modem economy, and also ensuring that Europe fully grasps the potential of the digital
age.
In this respect, I am looking forward to continue working with you during the mandate and
look forward to our meeting.
Yours sincerely
