Virtual
Roundtable with the European cloud computing industry
7 May 2021, 15:00 -16:00
Hand-over of the European industrial technology roadmap for the next generation cloud-
edge offering
BRIEFING NOTE
Scene setter/Context of the meeting:
The objective of this event is to formally hand-over the “
European industrial technology
roadmap for the next generation cloud-edge offering”. The Roadmap has been prepared by
27 European companies upon your request following the 1st
Roundtable on Cloud
hosted by you on 16 December 2020. It is the second time that you will gather with
on
cloud topics.
On 6 May afternoon, you will receive the final Technology Roadmap accompanied by a joint
Letter signed by all 27
, in which they support the creation of the European Alliance for
Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud under your patronage.
The Roundtable will gather 15
from across the data processing value chain and 2 users
perspectives at Senior Executive level (see draft list of participants & CVs below).
You could start the meeting with a short introduction (5 minutes), and close the meeting
with operational conclusions (5 minutes). After your introduction, Capgemini (
- TBC) will deliver a short presentation giving an overview of
the Technology Roadmap on behalf of the 27 companies (10 minutes). The slides will be
shared with you in advance (a preliminary version is in annex). You could then invite
to
deliver short statements (2 minutes each = 34 minutes in total).
The following two questions have been proposed to participants (see draft agenda
attached):
In which priority technology area(s) of the roadmap, does your company intend to be
a major role player?
What are your expectations for the European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and
Cloud to build Europe’s data leadership?
Objective of the meeting:
Invite participants to join the European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud to
be launched by Q2, 2021.
Invite participants to co-invest in a common initiative to build this infrastructure and
support our industrial competitiveness across the data supply chain (including in the
context of a possible IPCEI).

Introduction (5 minutes)
Dear all,
First, I would like to thank you for having answered my invitation to
participate to this round table, and it is a pleasure to see you again
since our 1st Roundtable in December. In particular, I would like to
thank you for your
letter and congratulate you for the excellent work
that has been delivered on the
European industrial technology
roadmap for the next generation cloud and edge offering.
This Roadmap is extremely timely. Two days ago, we have presented
the
update of the European Industrial Strategy of 2020. This review
shows a more assertive approach to realise the industrial ambition
we share for our continent. For cloud and data, dealing with our
dependencies means that we have to make sure we have sufficient
supply and capacities here in Europe.
An important tool will be the launch of the
European Alliance for
Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud in the next couple months to
coordinate and attract the needed public and private investment.
Most importantly, we want to bring together the European cloud and
edge industrial ecosystem towards a joint strategic agenda, and your
Roadmap will present a very important input in this regard.
We have an unprecedented market opportunity, which is
edge
computing and more distributed forms of computing and
intelligence. This is why we have set a clear target in the
Digital
Decade Strategy of 10.000 edge nodes by 2030. It is critical that we
join forces to avoid that the current market situation – with the
dominance of a few global hyperscalers - will reproduce itself for the
next generation of critical cloud and edge services. Therefore,
I
warmly invite you to apply to the upcoming call for expression of
interest of the European Alliance.
This Roadmap is very timely as well for the
EU investment agenda.
Member States have started to submit their final Recovery and
Resilience Plans, and the European Commission will soon publish the
first calls for proposal under the new EU programmes, including the
Digital Europe Programme. Furthermore, as many of you are well
aware, several Member States are currently exploring a possible
Important Project of Common European interest (IPCEI) focusing on
next generation technologies for cloud and edge infrastructure and
services.
Now the floor is yours. I am looking forward to hearing the views of
your companies on the Technology Roadmap.

Conclusion (5 Minutes)
I very much welcome that the
technology path set out by the
European Technology Roadmap is strongly aligned with the European
priorities. The European cloud and edge industry has to seize the
demand for climate neutrality, interoperability and security, and the
need for more distributed data processing capacities.
We
need to deliver on the investment needed today, and already
start preparing the investment of tomorrow. The Alliance will be our
main tool to do so. We need to look beyond 2025, to prepare
investment for technologies that do not exist today, and that could
be financed through a possible Important Project of Common
European Interest.
All of your companies have an important role to play to shape the
future data ecosystem and Europe’s technological leadership in this
area. I thank you once again for your commitment and look forward
to continuing working together with you under the future Alliance.
Background information
Technology Roadmap (See also attached executive summary)
The Roadmap provides a common view of 27 companies on the key priority areas requiring
strategic public-private investments by 2025 to strengthen Europe’s technological leadership
in cloud and edge technologies. The work has been coordinated by Capgemini, and most
active companies (“draft leads”) included: SAP, Telefonica, Atos, Leaseweb, Cloud Ferro and
Siemens, amongst others.
According to the Roadmap, setting Europe on track for the Digital Decade would require
joint public-private investment of around
19 billion Euros by 2025 in cloud and edge. Priority
areas for EU joint investments efforts revolve around three pillars:
Becoming the leader in domains that will shape European cloud and edge offerings
on the global market, focusing on climate-neutrality, cybersecurity, trustworthy data
exchange and interoperability.
Renewing and expanding infrastructure foundations across Europe, including an
increased density of edge and cloud facilities across the continent, backed by
network and interconnectivity services that will enable innovative use cases at
scale.
Enabling sovereign and sector-specific services to end-users, providing businesses
with trusted options that match global standards in terms of price and resilience.
