Advertising by the Commission highlighting combined Olympic medal tallies

The request was successful.

Dear DG Communication,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

For a number of years, the Commission has advertised combined medal take by EEC/EC/EU member states in major sporting events as a single Community tally. This has been done in the past by taking out adverts in national newspapers, particularly with respect to the Olympics.

Correspondingly, please supply the following information;

(i) When this policy began (I seem to remember a newspaper advert that went out in the UK after the 1988 Olympics)

(ii) What budget has been spent on this objective following the 2016 Olympics; and how this compares with funding available in previous years where the figures are easily identifiable

(iii) Which media outlets were used to this effect to highlight the 2016 Olympic successes

(iv) What is the mission statement, or stated strategic purpose, for undertaking this activity?

Please post my response to

Yours faithfully,

Lee Rotherham
