How do I retain my EU citizenship when UK leaves Europe?

Court of Justice of the European Union did not have the information requested.

Dear European Court of Justice,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:
How do I retain my rights to EU citizenship when UK leaves Europe.

Yours faithfully,

Caroline Ford

Dear European Court of Justice,

Your response to my question: How do i retain my EU citizenship when UK leaves Europe? has been delayed. I understand that by law you should normally respond promptly. I would welcome your response to my question. I have approached my MP but he has no advice to give me.

Yours faithfully,

caroline ford

Andersson Astrid,

Dear Ms Ford,

Thank you for your e-mail which was recently received by the Press and Information Unit of the Court of Justice.

In response to your query, I must first make it absolutely clear that the Court of Justice cannot provide legal advice to individuals about their specific legal problems. To do so could prejudice the work of the Court if such a matter were to subsequently arise in a case before it.

For information, any person who holds the nationality of an EU country is automatically also an EU citizen. EU citizenship is additional to and does not replace national citizenship. There is no separate document or procedure for acquiring EU citizenship as it is an automatic status which all nationals of Member States acquire. EU citizenship is parasitic on citizenship of one of the EU Member States.

As regards the retention of EU citizenship once the UK leaves the European Union and is no longer a Member State, I reiterate that there is no separate document or procedure for acquiring EU citizenship. All issues linked to the UK's decision to leave the European Union will be subject to the political discussions and negotiations which will take place over the next two years. The Court of Justice is not a political institution and has no active role in these negotiations.

I hope that the above information is of some use.

Yours sincerely,

Astrid Andersson
