Dear Mr Stolton,

We refer to your e-mail dated 17 January 2020 in which you make a request
for access to documents, registered on the same date under the
abovementioned reference number.

By way of your application to DG CONNECT you requested documents which
contain the following information:

1.            Detailed minutes of the meeting held on January 16th 2019
between Gen. John Shanahan, director of Joint Artificial Intelligence
Center at the U.S. Department of Defense and DG Connect representatives.
You also requested a list of the individuals present, as well as a
breakdown of the issues discussed.

2.            Detailed minutes of any meeting held in the month of January
2019 between Gen. John Shanahan, director of Joint Artificial Intelligence
Center at the U.S. Department of Defense and European Commission officials
from other DGs.

3.            All correspondence (i.e. any emails, correspondence,
telephone call notes, and/or text messages including WhatsApp exchanges)
between DG CONNECT (including Commissioners Vestager, Breton, or Jourova,
and any Cabinet representatives) and Mr. Shanahan or a representative of
his, over the past year.

By your email, dated 19 January 2020, you clarified that you meant January
2020, not 2019. We understand that this clarification concerns both points
1 and 2 of your request. Could you please confirm.

With regard to point 3 of your request, pursuant to Article 6(2) of
Regulation (EC) No 1049/2001 regarding public access to documents we ask
you to clarify the timeframe especially with regard to the Commissioners
and Cabinets. In this respect we would like to draw your attention to the
fact that the portfolios of some of the Commissioners you mentioned are
not related to DG CONNECT or at least were not related for most of the
relevant timeframe. Please note in this regard that we understand that
point 3 of your request concerns correspondence over the past year
counting from the date of your application, namely between 17 January 2019
and 17 January 2020.

We kindly ask you to reply by email to
[6][email address]

In accordance with Article 2, third paragraph of the Implementing Rules to
Regulation 1049/2001 (Official Journal L 345 of 29.12.2001, p. 94), the 15
working days time limit for handling your application will start running
when we receive the requested clarification.

Thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully,
