Dear European Border and Coast Guard Agency,

According to the data published by the Agency on “Detections of illegal border-crossings; monthly statistics”, since 2018 there is a considerable increase of people being reported as “unknown nationalities” and “unspecified sub-Saharan” nationals in the Western Mediterranean and Western Atlantic migratory routes.

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting a copy of all documents that:

(1) include a breakdown or estimation about the nationalities reported by the Spanish Government as “unknown nationalities” and “unspecified sub-saharan nationals”, since 2018;

(2) relate to the clarification of “unknown nationalities” and “unspecified sub-saharan nationals”, including any correspondence, emails and minutes of meetings between the European Border and Coast Guard Agency and the Spanish Government.

Dear European Border and Coast Guard Agency,

Thank you for your response and my apologies for the late reply. I hereby clarify the scope of point 1 of my application: a copy of all documents that include a breakdown or estimation about the nationalities reported by the Spanish Government as “unknown nationalities” and “unspecified sub-Saharan nationals”, since 2018.

I see that the data used by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency to produce the “Migratory Map” includes an increasing number of people reported as “unknown nationalities” and “unspecified sub-saharan nationals” in the Western Mediterranean and Western Atlantic Routes. We are interested in knowing where “sub-Saharan nationals” comes from (e.g., Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal), as this data is available for all the other migratory routes reported by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, such as the Central Mediterranean and the Eastern Mediterranean routes.

I hope this clarification would be enough to register and process my application in due time.
