Research into pulse or electric shock trawling

The request was successful.

Dear Maritime Affairs and Fisheries,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

You currently allow about 100 trawlers to use the pulse or electric shock trawling method when fishing in EU waters despite that method being illegal under EU law (Article 31 of Council Regulation (EC) No. 850/98). These trawlers are permitted to break the law because,it is said, they are engaged in research. It is assumed that you are monitoring this research with a view to making a decision about the long term use of this method in EU waters. With that in mind and in reference to pulse or electric shock trawling for fish please:

1 - disclose the description of the research design that the researchers have no doubt produced to you

2 - disclose full details of the research already carried out along with whatever preliminary results which have been obtained

3 - indicate how long it is anticipated the research will continue

4 - indicate to what use you expect to be able to put the results of the research once obtained

5 - disclose the identity or identities of the researchers or, if there is good reason not to disclose that or those identities, explain what steps you have taken to satisfy yourself that the researchers are qualified to conduct the research

6 - disclose all communications between your office or yourself and the Dutch fishing industry in connection with this method of fishing over the period since 1 January 2012

Yours faithfully,

Peter Ryder
