Translations for 2011 and 2012

The request was partially successful.

Dear European Court of Justice,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

- Documents ref. Number of decisions (judgments) translated in all languages in 2010, 2011 and 2012 (total and breakdown for each EU court in part)
- Documents on amounts for translations for 2011 and 2012
- Information on why not all Judgments are translated in all languages.

Yours faithfully,

A.J. Ross

Fretwell Christopher, Court of Justice of the European Union

Dear A.J. Ross,

Before dealing with your request I would like to point out that Regulation 1049/2001 does not apply to the Court of Justice. The Court of Justice has its own decision, available on its website (http://curia.europa.eu/jcms/jcms/P_92908/) which regulates access to documents held by the Court in the exercise of its administrative functions.

In response to your request I can inform you that the number of judgments translated into all languages for each court is as follows:

Court of Justice:
2010 - 312
2011 - 307
2012 - 312

General Court:
2010 - 101
2011 - 129
2012 - 76

Which gives totals of:

2010 - 413
2011 - 436
2012 - 388

Assuming that your second request relates to the total volume of translations carried out by the Court, I can inform you that in 2011 977 059 pages were translated and 891 436 pages were translated in 2012.

As to your final question, as of 1 May 2004, because of limited resources and budget, the Court has not translated all of its judgments into all languages. Those that are to be published in the European Court Reports are translated. However, if the Court decides not to publish a decision in the European Court Reports, it is not translated. Such decisions are available in the language of procedure and in French (the language in which they were drafted) on the Court's website.

Guidance as to which cases are published (and therefore translated) can be found on our website here: http://curia.europa.eu/jcms/jcms/Jo2_149....

Christopher Fretwell
