Honda's accelerated electrification ambitions
Dear Commissioner Dombrovskis,
Last week, on Earth Day, world leaders committed their countries to accelerated C02 reduction targets
set out ambitious new initiatives in the areas of environment and safety, which included how the
company will make its contribution to tackling climate change and achieving net zero by 2050, including
an ambitious commitment for 100% of global automobile sales to be electric by 2040.
The key points of the plan are:
Honda will increase the ratio of battery-electric vehicles (EVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles
2035, and then to 100% globally by 2040
Honda will aim to lead the motorcycle industry with an approach which will include not only
electrification but also the improvement of the fuel efficiency of gasoline engines, utilization of
biofuels and other strategies. The development of swappable batteries and associated
infrastructure will be a key part of this approach.
including carbon-neutral fuels, which will be effective in all areas, including where electrification
is difficult, such as with aircraft.
The detailed press release can be seen on Hondanews.eu.
climate emergency and to support the European Union and the Member States in delivering on
decarbonisation ambitions and the Green Deal.  We look forward to working with you in the coming
months the Commission works on key dossiers relevant to electrification, such as the review of the
Batteries Regulation, proposals for a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and of course the upcoming
review of the new car C02 regulations.
I would be delighted to have an opportunity to discuss this announcement with you in further detail,
Kind regards,
