EU Expenses
Dear European Parliament,
Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:
I would like to know the following information, for the last five years, broken down annually, EU Commissioners and Members of the European Parliament:
(a) The full details of all expenses,
(b) Expenses used on wine, beer or alcohol related beverages,
(c) Expenses used on coffee, tea, or in coffee shops,
(d) Expenses used on dry cleaning,
(e) Expenses used on chauffeur and chauffeur driven cars (please give the full cost of car hire),
(f) Expenses used on gifts,
(g) Expenses used on haircuts.
If you need further clarification, please contact me by email. My preferred format to receive the information is electronically, but I can accept hard copies.
Some parts of this request may be easier to answer than others, and in such case I would ask that you release available data as soon as possible rather than delay the entire request.
If FOI requests of a similar nature have been asked already, please include your responses to those requests. If the costs of processing this request exceed the limit in the Act, please advise what information you are able to supply within the cost limit.
I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have received this request. I look forward to your response within 20 working days, as outlined by the statute.

Dear Mr Comley,
The Citizens’ Enquiries Unit of the European Parliament has been asked to
reply to your request for information concerning expenditure related to
allowances and different services provided to Members of the European
Parliament and the European Commissioners over the last five years.
We would inform you that the relevant figures are to be found in the
General Budget of the European Union for the different financial years.
As an example, please refer to the 2016 budget for the European Union, as
well as that of the European Parliament for 2016. In particular, the
following expenses are covered by the corresponding budget lines: salaries
- 1000, general expenditure allowance - 1006, allowances for performance
of duties - 1007, transport of Members - 216, and reception and
representation expenses - 302.
The same information is available for the previous financial exercises in
order to obtain figures for the past five years.
Further information concerning the specific amounts to which Members are
entitled under the different allowances is available on the About MEPs
webpage, as well as the Frequently Asked Questions to the Parliament's
Press Service.
We would also like to point out that obviously the administration of the
European Parliament does not hold any information related to the breakdown
of private expenses of Members (such as dry cleaning, hairdressers, etc.),
which have no specific budgetary lines for these purposes and would thus
be covered by their salary.
Finally, information about EU Commissioners should be requested directly
from the European Commission's services.
