EU SDG indicators
Dear Eurostat,
Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting the following:
-Any documents containing the complete EU-specific list of Sustainable Development Goals indicators developed by Eurostat.
-Any documents containing the UN Sustainable Development Goals indicators excluded by Eurostat.
-Documents which describe the decision-making process by which Eurostat decided to include or not include some indicators, judging some to be "relevant" and others to be of "little or no relevance" for European countries.
I am interested here in receiving documents that show:
-What reasons or criteria make an UN indicator relevant for the EU, as well as what reasons or criteria make an UN indicator of little or no relevance for the EU.
-Which public bodies and officials were responsible for deciding upon the final list of SDGs indicators selected and excluded by Eurostat.
As context to this question, I note that in correspondence with the Eurostat Support Centre, on 11 April 2019 you provided me with the following statement:
“As the statistical office of the EU, Eurostat may consider that there are a number of UN indicators which lie outside the scope of official statistics, for example, indicators on governance. Furthermore, in developed economies, some of the indicators from the UN indicator list for monitoring SDGs may be considered as being of little or no relevance, as they refer to issues that are more pertinent for analysing developing countries (for example, indicators measuring the share of the population that is living within close proximity of a paved road, or the availability of modern methods for family planning).
With this in mind, and following the Communication on European action for sustainability, European Commission services have developed an EU-specific indicator list, designed to measure progress in relation to sustainable development issues”.
Hence, I am seeking documents that relate to the decision making around the EU-specific indicator list.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any clarifications on this request.
Yours faithfully,
Natalia Lázaro
