Dear Taskforce on Article 50 negotiations with the United Kingdom,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

your detailed strategies for negotiating the place in the UK of EU nationals wishing to remian in the UK and the place in the EU of UK citizens wishing to remain in the EU after the UK leaves the EU;

your detailed strategies for negotiating the future trading relationship between the UK and EU nations after the UK leaves the EU;

your detailed strategies on negotiating how the border between the Republic of Ireland and the UK will function after the UK leaves the EU.

Electronic rather than hard copies will be acceptable.

We refer to your e-mail of 28 November 2017 in which you asked for information about EU strategies on negotiations.

With reference to your question related to "strategies for negotiating the place in the UK of EU nationals wishing to remain in the UK and the place in the EU of UK citizens wishing to remain in the EU after the UK leaves the EU" we refer to the Joint Report agreed by the negotiators of the EU and the United Kingdom Government, endorsed by Prime Minister May and President Juncker. The Joint Report envisages a full and reciprocal protection for EU citizens and UK citizens who have exercised free movement rights by the date of UK's withdrawal from the EU:

With reference to your question about "strategies for negotiating the future trading relationship between the UK and EU nations after the UK leaves the EU" we refer to the European Council guidelines of 29 April 2017 and 15 December 2017:

Please note that the European Council on 22-23 March 2018 is expected to adopt additional guidelines as regards the framework for the future relationship. On the basis of these new guidelines, the discussion on scoping the parameters of the future relationship will start.
