Meetings on 'problematic plastics', 'chemicals of concern' related to plastic treaty negotiations
Dear DG ENV,
Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, and based on the Aarhus Directive on public access to environmental information (Directive 2003/4/EC). I am requesting documents which contain the following information:
- Any records related to “problematic plastics”, or types of plastic products that cannot easily be recycled that may be banned or phased out, "chemicals of concern,” or chemicals/additives used in plastic production that may be harmful due to their high toxicity and potential to migrate or be released from plastics, and the plastic treaty negotiations. These can include chemicals identified by UNEP such as specific flame retardants, certain UV stabilizers, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), phthalates, bisphenols, alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates, biocides, certain metals and metalloids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and many other non-intentionally added substances (NIAS).
- I would like to see any correspondence, including but not limited to logs of meetings, minutes, summaries, and emails from December 1, 2021 onward, between Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius and/or his cabinet and his cabinet's officials, and plastics manufacturers, petrochemical companies and industry associations representing these groups, related to the development of a global treaty on plastic and plastic pollution, chemicals of concern and problematic plastics, and the United Nations Environment Assembly consideration thereof.
Cabinet's officials would include but not be limited to Mr. Hugo Maria Schally, Mr. Sebastian Gil, Ms. Sara Nelen, Ms. Gordana Topic, Mr. Christoffer Vestli, Ms. Astrid Schomaker, Mme. Anne Delvaux, Mr. Roberto Scazzola, and Ms. Justyna Filipowicz.
Yours faithfully,
