Dear Directorate General Enviroment

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, and the right of acces to enviromental information, as developed in Regulation 2003/4/CE y 2003/35/CE, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

Dear Ms. Ley,

Thank you for your request for information concerning Europe's rivers.

1. For question 1, please find here enclosed the links to our
implementation reports under the water framework directive (WFD), nitrates
and bathing water directives, which set European environmental standards
which can "fail". As for biodiversity standards, the relevant standard
under water legislation would be the WFD ecological status.

Links to the implementation reports for the WFD:

[1]http://ec.europa.eu/environment/water/wa...
(you will note that the most recent assessment (3rd report) dates from end
2012.  There is a Member State assessment for Spain.
[2]http://ec.europa.eu/environment/water/wa...

As you can see, the assessment is limited by the fact that Spain has, as
yet, not submitted all its river basin management plans.

If you wish to look at particular rivers, please look into the WISE
viewer:
[3]http://www.eea.europa.eu/themes/water/in...
It is interactive, so if you zoom in you will see the status of the main
rivers and lakes and can click on them for more information.

You may also wish to consult the latest assessment of European waters from
the European Environmental Agency (EEA):

For bathing water, there have been annual reports published every year
since 2005. There are also interactive maps and tabular viewers in WISE.
All should be accessible from the following general link:
[5]http://ec.europa.eu/environment/water/wa...
For convenience, we attach the link to the most recent report (2013).

For Nitrates, the links to the implementation reports can be found at the
following link:

2. In respect of levels of pollution, the only information we get at EU
level is in the Waterbase hosted by the EEA, and can be found at
[8]http://www.eea.europa.eu/themes/water/dc...

National authorities may have more detailed information.

Yours sincerely,
