Why does UK have the lowest number of MEPs per capita?

Estamos a la espera de que Vernon Moyse lea una respuesta reciente y de que actualice el estado.

Dear Permanent Representation of UK to the EU,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information: how the number of MEPs per capita is decided

Yours faithfully

Vernon Moyse

AsktheEU.org Team,

The UK Permanent Representation to the EU (UKRep) acknowledges receipt of
your email dated May 26 2019. Please find the below response:

The number of MEPs per EU member state is decided by a proposal by the
European Parliament, agreed by European Council. The decision takes into
account the population of member states and follows the principle of
degressive proportionality (that means that “countries that are smaller in
terms of population should have fewer MEPs than bigger countries.  At the
same time, MEPs from larger countries should represent more people than
MEPs from smaller countries. In this way, members from smaller countries
have a relatively stronger presence in Parliament”)

We refer any further questions regarding this matter to the responsible
body, the European Parliament. The details of their UK liaison office can
be found here:
