Meeting between Cabinet Vestager and the European Center of the Atlantic Council, 7 September
2022
Atlantic Council:
Cabinet Vestager: Alejandro Cainzos
Note taker:
The meeting took place at the request of the Atlantic Council.
The Atlantic Council announced their own report on digital sovereignty and enquired about the
Trade and Technology Council (TTC). Notably, they asked about alignment with the US and
expectations for deliverables. The Atlantic Council transmitted the wish of businesses for more
communication about the TTC. Cabinet Vestager explained EU-US work on the TTC and its benefits
so far, highlighting the need to engage stakeholders. While some deliverables are very tangible
projects, the TTC has also delivered less visible benefits through continuous engagement at working
group level and dialogue at Principals’ level. The Atlantic Council also outlined the Trade and
Technology Dialogue project, which will have three tracks: 1) trade and supply chains; 2) digital and
tech; 3) climate and clean tech. The project will engage stakeholders to identify possible projects and
benefits of each track. Cabinet Vestager welcomed the progress and outlined their willingness to
engage with it.
The Atlantic Council also asked about remaining priorities in the field of digital and tech for the
mandate of the College, the implementation of adopted legislation such as the Digital Services Act
and Digital Markets Act, as well as upcoming actions on cybersecurity. Cabinet Vestager replied to
the questions, also referring to the upcoming State of the Union speech by Commission President
von der Leyen.
