Subject: Follow up call president Von der Leyen?

Dear Anthony,

If I am not mistaken, you attended the call with president Von der Leyen Tuesday?

Happy to discuss and/or support you on follow-up?
I am still working in the coming days, or shall we schedule a call end of August?

Some additional input on the topics that were discussed:

1.
Single Market

Regarding the Single Market, it was great to hear that the President will address this
theme in her State of the Union.
Besides ERT’s flagship and the recent joint with other associations on ‘renewing
economic integration in the EU’ (also attached),

In case you missed it, this week’s EESC published a good paper on the “benefits of the
single market”.
It calculated that the cost of fragmentation was 990 EUR in 2019 (pre-Covid) and it spells
out the biggest barriers.

As you may know, the business community and the EU Member States are wary of the
upcoming Single Market Emergency Instrument (SMEI) which is focused on preparing
for possible future crises by imposing mapping exercises, stockpiling requirements or
reporting obligations.
This instrument is scheduled to be adopted on 13 September and should not
distract from the bigger picture, namely deepening the Single Market fundamentally, as
a new engine for growth.

The ambition of the European Commission should be to rally everyone behind a positive
and inspiring agenda, by designing an encompassing programme to remove existing
intra-EU barriers in all sectors. This will give a much-needed boost for the recovery

and improve the EU’s competitiveness, in the interest of all EU Member States and
citizens.

We are at your disposal to share more insights and ideas of course.

2.
5G

We are in the process of updating ERT’s assessment of the (slow) 5G roll-out in Europe
and will also comment on the EC’s plans for a connectivity package.

We published a first 5G roll-out report in 2020 and it’s available on our site.

3.
Cybersecurity

As previously discussed also with
, ERT is regularly bringing together
its Chief Cybersecurity Officers for a dialogue on information sharing and threat
mitigation. The group remains interested in a meeting with ENISA and relevant national
authorities.

Kind regards,

Secretary General
