In the margins of the TTIP negotiations last week in New York, we met upon
request of the USTR with the US soy bean industry.
The industry basically wanted to inform us that they had applied earlier that week
for a private sustainability scheme with the European Commission. They
presented the different aspects of their application (compliance with sustainability
criteria, GHG reduction and audit).
We expressed our satisfaction with the application, although we could not see
anything more given the recent date and the fact that DG ENER is in charge of
the application in the first place. We explained that the application is to be
understood as a dialogue. Experts will assess their application in the coming
months and the entire process may take up to one year (depending of course of
the submitted information). We asked some additional questions on forecasted
exports, on the determination of GHG reduction (at what level) and how the new
thresholds for food based biofuels would affect them.
