…I would like to welcome you all, ladies and gentlemen, and above all I would like to extend
a particularly heartfelt welcome to my dear Morten Kjaerum, who is a regular guest in this
building. It is a pleasure and an honour to welcome you to this year’s annual conference of
the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights and to the topic that it has chosen, namely ‘Justice in
austerity – challenges and opportunities for access to justice’. I have already mentioned
Morten Kjaerum: he is a friend, an ally of the European Parliament; or to put it the other
way round, the European Parliament is an ally of the Agency for Fundamental Rights. A
warm welcome to him in particular.
Not only to him, though, but to the institute, the agency, and its entire team. A team which
– as I have been told – has taken part in the preparation of this conference very actively,
together with the two parliamentary committees that have already been mentioned,
namely that for Civil liberties, justice and home affairs, the LIBE Committee, and the Legal
affairs Committee, and supported by the Cyprus Presidency…
Ihm gilt mein besonders herzliches Willkommen.
