Invitation to TABD Meeting in Brussels on March 18
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your email and updated invitation.
We have assessed that Commissioner Malmström could attend such a meeting on 30 June 2016 from 15:00 till
15:45. Let me know whether the proposed time would be feasible on your side, too. Thanks.
Kind regards,

Hey, Maria,
I can see your problem on how to best advise the Commissioner in light of the Amcham and GMF
events. We had picked the March 18 date since we knew both the Commissioner and Ambassador
Froman would be in Brussels that day due to their commitments to speak at the Brussels Forum. I
know TABD members prefer a meaningful meeting, and I personally am not a big supporter of taking
the time of senior officials just because members would like to have a meeting. I can appreciate the
pressure you have with the constant requests for meetings.
How about this idea? With the Commissioner and Amb. Froman aiming for concluding the middle
game this summer, it would actually be more meaningful and impactful for the TABD to meet with
the two trade ministers prior to the July round. A meeting in Brussels during the week of June 27 or
perhaps as late as July 7 or 8 should draw a large turnout of senior executives on our side when we
explain what is at stake in the July round. I’m confident I can explain such a change to the TABD
chairs and members. If you and the Commissioner agree, the sooner your team can select an exact
date, the sooner I can get it on the calendars of the TABD members and the sooner I can get begin
coordinating with Ambassador Froman’s office.
Let me know your thoughts.

Hi again,
I will check with her when she is back in office next week, but I note that she has already agreed to
an Amcham event on 17 March, and to an event at the GMF with Mike Froman on 18 March- tbc. It
is getting a bit much.
You cannot co-organise with AmCham by chance?
Yours
mia

Thanks, Maria, for the clarification. I think some of the press reporting took too much
liberty in their reporting of Commissioner Malmström’s comments. Regarding the TABD
meeting, please let me know if there is a time on March 18 that would work better for the
Commissioner, and I will then go back to the TABD chairs and BASF to see if that works. I’ve
been told that Ambassador Froman will most likely fly into Brussels on that day. If arriving
from Washington, he would arrive in early morning.

Dear Tim,
We will of course “process” the invitation, but I note that her calendar is already very
charged that date.
Let me clarify that the Commissioner cannot have said that it would be possible to
conclude this summer- in a best case scenario we can conclude “the middle game” by then. It must be
a misunderstanding. Nevertheless, 2016 will be a crucial year.
Yours sincerely
maria

Maria,
Attached is an invitation for Commissioner Malmström to attend a TABD meeting in
Brussels on March 18. Details are in the letter. With the Commissioner’s recent
comment about perhaps concluding TTIP negotiations during this summer, the
Members are quite interested in having this meeting with the Commissioner and
Ambassador Froman.
Kind regards,
Tim Bennett
