Items for discussion
Cefic informed about on-going work on the chemical industry's contribution to circular
economy and mitigation of climate change. Cefic was considering various options
including 'feedstock recycling' as measures that over time could help the industry
diminish its current high dependence on fossil fuel based feedstock. Cefic suggested that
the Commission could engage directly with the contractor working for Cefic on the
feedstock recycling project with a view to help validate the underlying data being used
for the calculations.
Cefic was also interested in knowing the Commission's intentions with regards to the
announced initiative on the interface between chemical, product and waste legislation.
We informed Cefic that the work on the interface was in good progress and that a
Roadmap soon would be published that would further describe the intentions and steps to
be taken, which would be open for comments from all interested parties. Later a more
detailed stakeholder consultation was envisaged with a view to gather evidence to
underpin the work.
We thanked Cefic for the information on feedstock recycling that seemed to hold some
potential promises, but also gave rise to important questions, including on the overall
energy needs. We welcomed the outlook to receive the final product from Cefic, but did
not wish to get further involved in the specific project.
