Hi

On the first question, our Office of Science representatives will naturally be prepared to
discuss ITER but the presentation and focus will be on DOE’s broader Fusion Energy Science
program.

The wind angle I think could be interesting as an area of potential cooperation that’s been
bouncing around for years. My understanding is that there are already some programmatic
linkages being carried out under DOE funded work at the National Laboratories (primarily
NREL) and Horizon 2020 projects (SENER as lead for a broader European consortium of labs
and universities) in the area of wind controllers and wind farm management.

Wind mapping is one particular are where I think there could be synergies similar to the
energy-water nexus work. As a summary: DOE is investing in wind sensing and monitoring
towards significant reductions in the cost of wind energy through an improved
understanding of the complex physics governing electricity generation by wind plants. The
goal to ensure future wind plants are sited, built, and operated in a way that produces the
most cost-effective, usable electric power. https://energy.gov/eere/wind/atmosphere-
electrons I think Horizon 2020 is engaged in similar workstreams as part of CL-Windcon
Closed Loop Wind Farm Control.  More specifically, my understanding is that there are only
a limited number of Universities/Companies that provide the sensor equipment necessary
for the mapping exercises. DOE ran into this during our Wind Forecasting Improvement
Project in Complex Terrain (WFIP2) projects in Washington and Oregon when we would
have extended the contracts to get more data for the modeling but the
universities/companies were already contracted to similar endeavors in Perdigao, Portugal.
Coordinating these types of projects to avoid overlap in equipment availability, sharing data
collected and exchanging best practices on modeling activities seems like low-hanging fruit.

Best wishes,

Hi

Hope you're well. Two quick questions: (1) Did you want to talk about ITER under nuclear
fusion? If so, we would have to bring in colleagues from DG ENER which might be difficult
on December 7. (2) What exactly did you want to discuss regarding wind? My colleagues
weren't sure they had much to bring to the table themselves.

Best wishes,

Hi

Good news.
is available to co-chair. I will need to double check
with the respective DOE presenters but I think we can tentatively lock in December
7 as the date for the Technology Working Group DVC. I’ll reach out to our Digital
Video Conferencing folks.

Best wishes,

Hi

Sorry, I should have spotted that. I'll enquire some more. Would early
December be an option as well?

Patrick Child has been acting director for energy research since András
Siegler's retirement a few months ago. A new director is being sought; I'll
keep you posted.

Best wishes,

Hi

That Thursday is Thanksgiving here in the United States so I think
we will need to search for another date. Is DDG Child the new co-
chair? Previously it had been Dr. Siegler.

Best wishes,

Dear

I checked on dates and times in November and it seems that as far
as DDG Patrick Child is concerned, the only possibility would be on
Thursday, November 23, from 15h00-17h00 Brussels time.
Apologies that I can't offer more alternatives - would this work on
your side?

All the best,

Hi

Sincere apologies for the delayed response. DOE programs are
enthusiastically looking forward to the Technology Working Group
meeting.

The agenda items resonated well. The only comment I might have is
that the energy-water nexus in grid modeling work seems to be
going very well. We might just ask co-chairs to give a nod to the
work and a planned workshop in Washington next year. That could
allow longer discussions in the other areas where my sense is that
there are opportunities to explore (or further advance)
4

cooperation. Would be great to perhaps swap presentations in
advance of the meeting, as applicable.

I also thought of cybersecurity research as an interesting area.
DOE’s CEDS program is taking some next generation approaches to
making energy and ICT systems more automatically responsive and
resilient: https://energy.gov/oe/downloads/cybersecurity-energy-
delivery-systems-ceds-fact-sheets. Not sure if there are parallels
within DG RTD but the topic is topical. Maybe a topic for a
dedicated separate DVC.

If you suggest a few dates in November I will coordinate with
’s schedule and with the DOE program folks.

Thanks so much as always.

Best wishes,

Subject: Next EU-US Energy Technology Working Group -
suggestions for agenda items

Hi

Hope you had/are still having a good summer. I received various
suggestions for what to put on the agenda at the next Energy
Technology WG meeting and wanted to run them by you. Here are
all of them:

-          Energy and Water nexus (suggested by RTD, DoE)
-          Mission Innovation: state of play, latest developments
regarding the Innovation Challenges and public-private
sector collaboration, the road to MI-3 (suggested by RTD;
DoE?)

-          Energy Union/Accelerating Clean Energy Innovation
Communication: state of implementation (suggested by
RTD)
-          U.S. QER 2nd instalment released in Jan 2017: state of
implementation (would this interest the DoE?)

-          Interoperability of smart grids and electric vehicles
(suggested by JRC)
-          Energy storage (suggested by JRC)

-          Nuclear fusion, latest developments as per the discussions
in the fusion committee (suggested by RTD. G.5

-          Wind, renewables in general (a possibility, if the earlier
discussions led to anything concrete – I'm checking on my
side)

What do you think? If we wanted to stick to our decision not to run
through all the different aspects of our cooperation anymore but to
concentrate on a few major issues, then perhaps the first two or the
first four points would be enough (provided of course that there is
nothing truly major to report under the other items). Otherwise, we
could enlarge the agenda to include the remaining points as well.
Let me know what you think.

As always, we're open to adjusting the agenda to any new
developments on your side.

All the best,
