Flash Report: Meeting with Airbus on strategic value chains
On 23 October, Slawomir Tokarski (GROW F) and
(GROW F1) met representatives of Airbus
(Ms Errard, SVP European Affairs and
to discuss strategic value
chains.
Airbus highlighted the strategic role of the aeronautics industry, with its spillovers to other sectors and
the role for strategic autonomy and the need for policy coordination on EU level between R&D&I, trade
& economic diplomacy and standards set by the European Aviation Safety Agency. They informed us
that aeronautics has been added by Council and Parliament to the list of strategic areas for the Foreign
Direct Investment Screening Mechanism.
In the context of the Strategic Forum on Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI), clean
and efficient aeronautics was proposed by France as strategic value chain. We explained the process of
the Strategic Forum on IPCEIs as expert group with Member States and industry representatives to
identify and prioritise strategic value chains. We clarified that the final list of strategic value chains
should not be seen as exhaustive list of strategic value chains, but as proposals for coordinated action
and investment between a number of Member States. The Airbus experience will be very helpful
background when the Strategic Forum will have to develop roadmaps for action for a number of
strategic value chains.
