The meeting took place at the request of Amazon to share their concerns as regards the proposed
regulation on the compliance with and enforcement of product safety legislation, part of the
"Goods package".
They underlined that Amazon strives to be the world’s most customer-centric company. They are
committed to the safety of customers and they work to improve the ways they ensure product
safety. In 2017 they removed 14 million products from their platform for safety reasons.
They were particularly concerned about the developments in the Council and the European
Parliament as regards the proposed regulation on the compliance with and enforcement of
product safety legislation. Article 4 of the Commission’s proposal requires manufacturers to
appoint a person responsible for compliance information in the EU. The co-legislators however
seem to extend this obligation significantly but making the "responsible person" legally liable for
product safety, without having assessed the impact of the change on business, in particular SMEs.
Amazon considered this amendment by the co-legislators as discriminatory and disproportionate
and that it will create an actual trade barrier for products to enter the EU.
