call with Gas Infrastructure Europe - report

GIE and Clean Hydrogen Alliance.pdf
Dear Colleagues,
On 19 November we had a call with Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), the European association of
renewable and low-carbon gases infrastructure operators. GIE members are active in transmission
pipelines, storage facilities and LNG terminals. It has 70 industry members from 26 European countries.
Their presentation attached.

Here are the key points raised:
  The flexibility of the energy system is important. The gas transmission system is mostly well
interconnected across EU’s countries and allows for highly economic and efficient supply,
transport and storage of enormous amounts of energy from production sites over long
distances. Gas grids are already suited for transporting biomethane and can be fit for hydrogen
with additional investments.
  Europe can strengthen its global leadership in hydrogen by combining storage capacities and
renewable energy available in Europe – Europe has a technical salt cavern hydrogen storage
potential of 85 PWh.
  Import terminals can connect Europe to global hydrogen markets and will enable hydrogen and
hydrogen carriers shipment within Europe (issue of certification of green hydrogen shipped to
Europe is important in this context)
  GIE has published a report on how The European gas infrastructure can help deliver the EU
Hydrogen Strategy
  We presented the latest developments related the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance
(European Hydrogen Forum, selection process for the roundtables and their operations – where
GIE has also applied)
