Ref. Ares(2021)5245063 - 24/08/2021

The ECCJ has long been calling for legislation on mandatory human rights and
environmental due diligence legislation. In this respect, we have produced a
number of relevant materials that might be useful for you to consider when
assessing and engaging in the process towards the Commission's proposal for the
abovementioned directive.
First and most importantly, we would like to share with you the attached document
with answers to the Frequently Asked Questions on civil liability for harm in
global business operations and value chains, which aims to shed some light on
the corporate liability regime that, in the opinion of the ECCJ, civil society, trade
unions, some business and the European Parliament, should come attached to
future corporate due diligence obligations - something the Commissioner for
Justice has reiteratedly committed to.
In addition to this document, we invite you to take a look at the following
complementary materials:
ECCJ EU model legislation on corporate responsibility to respect human
rights and the environment (February 2020).
Debating corporate due diligence: A reality check - an ECCJ guide debunking
myths against corporate due diligence and liability legislation (November
2020).
What if? - an ECCJ report on how EU due diligence laws could help protect
people and the planet (September 2020).
Comparative table of corporate due diligence laws and legislative proposals in
Europe (May 2021).
Map of corporate accountability legislative progress in Europe (May 2021).
Don't hesitate to reach out should you find it useful to discuss any of the above
documents or any further questions regarding the upcoming directive.
We remain at your disposal.
Kind regards,
--
