Accredited media organisations
Dear Madam, Sir,
Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:
– All documents which list organisations currently accredited to the EU institutions.
I am not interested in personal data such as names of accredited persons or their e-mail addresses or phone numbers. I am interested in the names of the organisations.
The reason for this is I have reason to believe that not all accredited organisations are in fact media organisations, but communications outreach or advocacy publications of non-governmental or non-profit organisations, think tanks or interest groups.
Media organisations can only receive accreditation if they are “editorially independent”, according to the European Commission (https://ec.europa.eu/info/about-european...). Furthermore: “Paper or online publications which are communications outreach or advocacy publications of non-governmental or non-profit organisations, think tanks or interest groups do not qualify for media accreditation.” Additionally: “The inter-institutional accreditation committee will reject applications from non-journalists, lobbyists and consultants, or those who have a professional side activity that they deem incompatible with permanent press accreditation.”
It is thus in the public interest that journalists like myself can review a list of all accredited organisations, and double-check if indeed all applications from lobbyists or persons working for publications that provide communications outreach for interest groups, have been rejected.
Since I am only asking for the names of organisations whose employees have received accreditation – and not the names of those employees – the exception from article 4.1b does not apply. A public disclosure of organisations which have accreditation can in no way undermine the privacy and the integrity of an individual.
If the information is available in a spreadsheet or other machine-readable format, that has my preference. In any case I prefer digital copies over paper ones.
I am at your disposal to provide any clarification you may need regarding my request.
Yours faithfully,
lukas kotkamp
