Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am writing to request information regarding EU funding contributions to UK universities. In order to assist you with this request, I am outlining my query as specifically as possible.
I would like to details of:
1. The total amount of EU funding for universities in the UK for the past five financial years
2. The amount of EU funding for universities in the UK for the past five financial years, broken down to show EU funding to each individual university.
If you need further clarification, please contact me by email. My preferred format to receive the information is electronically, but I can accept hard copies.
Some parts of this request may be easier to answer than others, and in such case I would ask that you release available data as soon as possible rather than delay the entire request.
If FOI requests of a similar nature have been asked already, please could you include your responses to those requests. If the costs of processing this request exceed the limit in the Act, please advise on what information you are able to supply within the cost limit.
I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have received this request. I look forward to your response within 20 working days, as outlined by the statute.

Thanks for your interest. Information on recipients of European Union’s
funds awarded under direct management are published on the Financial
Transparency System (FTS) website
http://ec.europa.eu/budget/fts/index_en.... before 30 June of the year
following the financial year in which the funds were awarded. Information
on the year 2014 will thus be available by the end of June 2015.
Information on years 2009 to 2013 has already been published on FTS
(direct management) and can be downloaded. When analysing the publicly
available FTS data, please note the detailed explanations of the database
You have asked the amount attributed to universities. The Commission´s
central accounting system, which is used to collect the data on
beneficiaries, was not designed with this purpose and does not contain
such a classification. It is however possible to perform a search on the
FTS website based on the names of recipients which contain the keyword
By example, for financial year 2013, a search on FTS returns 1.504 results
for a total amount of 2.962.697.560€ (Country "United Kingdom" and name of
the recipient containing "university"). It means that those 1.504
commitments have at least one recipient of funds whose official name
contains the keyword "university". This total amount may also relate to
recipients that are not universities and not located in UK. Indeed, in
below example (picture attached), the total amount committed is
26.459.215€. Only one percent of this amount relates to recipient both
located in UK and containing the keyword "university".
