Number of state aid complaints from UK

La demande est réussie.

Dear Competition (COMP),

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

1) How many state aid complaints have been submitted to DG Competition from the UK since 1st January 2013?

2) Of these, how many relate to awards of aid:

(a) in Wales
(b) in England
(c) in Scotland
(d) in Northern Ireland
(e) in other EU and EFTA countries?

Yours faithfully,

Wim Piper

Dear Mr Piper,

Please disregard our previous message asking you to provide a postal address which was sent to you by mistake.

As to your request, we don't register in our systems the country of origin of complainants which is not relevant for the assessment of compatibility with State aid rules. So there is unfortunately no specific document corresponding to your request.

What we do register is the member State which is the "target" of the complaint. Please find below a breakdown by member State of the 387 State aid complaints registered by DG Competition since 01/01/2013.

As to your second question, we only register the region where an aid measure will be granted in cases where this is relevant for the assessment of the case. Those are typically aid projects with a regional development objective.

Even for those, when dealing with a complaint, we depend on the information submitted by complainants which is not always complete and accurate. Part of the investigation process consists of collecting the information we need to assess the case (from the complainant or any other source) and some of the complaints from the above breakdown list are still under investigation so it is not possible to give you a reliable breakdown per UK region.

On your 2) (e) question, please note that the Commission is only dealing with State aid in EU countries. Aid measures in EFTA countries fall under the competence of the EFTA surveillance authority (http://www.eftasurv.int/).
