unaccompanied asylum seeking children in the EU

La demande est partiellement réussie.

Dear European Asylum Support Office,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

Following the closure of the Calais refugee camp by the French authorities in October 2016, many UASC/children fled the area or were disbursed elsewhere. Some children fled without being accommodated by the French authorities. My questions concern the fate of these children:

1. How many UASC did each member state of the EU accept? What was the nationality of these children?

2. How many UASC were granted asylum and how many are still awaiting an asylum decision? Please provide information in terms of the nationality and number of UASC in each member state.

3. How many UASC and from which countries are unaccounted for following the closure of the Calais camp.

Yours faithfully,

John Campbell

Dear Mr Campbell,

Kindly find enclosed a letter from Mr José Carreira, Executive Director of
EASO, in response to your request for access to documents.

In order to ensure proper functioning of the hyperlinks, please find text
of the letter below:

Dear Mr. Campbell,

Reference is made to your e-mail dated 14 December 2017, in which you made
a request for obtaining information concerning the fate of the UASC /
children following the closure of the Calais refugee camp. Your request
has been registered under number 8098.

Your application has been treated as a request falling under the
provisions of Regulation No 1049/2001 regarding public access to European
Parliament, Council and Commission documents, which also applies for EASO
documents, and in accordance with Decision No 6 laying down practical
arrangements regarding public access to the documents of EASO, as adopted
by its Management Board on 20 September 2011.

In a preliminary note, I wish to reiterate EASO's mandate, which primarily
lies with asylum seekers only, i.e. those persons who, regardless on how
they have travelled to the EU (either regularly or irregularly), have made
a formal application for international protection with the responsible
first-instance asylum authority. However, the target group of your
question may not necessarily fulfil these conditions.

Although EASO receives information on claimed UAM applications lodged in
the EU28, plus Norway and Switzerland (referred to as the EU+), this
information is only disaggregated by reporting country. The figures
exchanged with EASO in the context of the Early Warning and Preparedness
System (EPS) are provided voluntarily and considered provisional. EASO
cannot release this information at the level of individual countries as
these numbers have not been officially validated given the very short time
limits under which it is exchanged with EASO.

You may nevertheless be interested to know that under the European Council
Regulation (EC) No 862/2007, Eurostat collects and disseminates publicly
on its website statistics on international protection
([1]http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/asylum-...).

In particular, a dataset on [2]Asylum applicants considered to be
unaccompanied minors including official statistics for all EU28 States as
well as Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein and Iceland broken down by
age, gender and citizenship of the applicant is published annually since
2008.

The following tailored extraction will lead you to a table indicating the
number of [3]asylum applicants considered to be unaccompanied minors
reported by France broken down by citizenship applicants between 2008 and
2016.

In addition, please note that the topic of unaccompanied minors is also
developed to some extent in [4]EASO Annual report 2016  (section 4.1.1.
Vulnerable applicants).

If you want this position to be reviewed you should write to EASO at the
address below, confirming your initial request. Your confirmatory request
should be sent within 15 working days from receipt of this letter. I will
inform you of the result of this review within 15 working days from the
registration of your request, either granting you access to the document
or confirming the refusal. In the latter case, you will be informed of how
you can take further action. All correspondence should be sent by one of
the following methods:
