Subject: Request for a meeting/video conference with representatives of the automotive, fuel, and
energy industry on the contribution of renewable fuels to climate neutrality and economic growth
Dear
I am approaching you on behalf of an informal coalition of associations from the automotive, fuel, and
energy industry as well as and civil society in the EU, to explore the possibility of meeting with you to
discuss priorities in climate policy and carbon emission reduction in the mobility sector.
We are committed to the Paris agreement and the even more ambitious EU objective of climate neu-
trality by 2050 and support the ambition for the Green Deal to contribute to economic growth. Climate
neutrality can be achieved through a technology open environment that balances environmental, social
as well as economic goals.
The Green Deal is a unique opportunity to align climate policies, including the revision of the Alternative
Fuels Infrastructure Directive, and to start integrating what are currently strictly sectoral regulations
into a coherent framework which delivers emission reduction and defossilisation of energy and fuels at
the lowest cost to society. We stand ready to contribute to the design of this framework.
To facilitate a discussion, we propose a meeting with a compact delegation comprised of CLEPA, E-fuels
Alliance, ePURE, FuelsEurope, IRU and NGVA Europe, which are well placed to speak about the opportu-
nities and policy solutions from a value chain perspective.
Understanding the time pressure on your agenda, we will contact your office in the coming days to find
out if and when a meeting on would be possible in the coming weeks.

AECC is the international association of European companies engaged in the development, production
and testing of catalyst and filter based technologies for engine exhaust emissions control. This includes
the development, testing and manufacture of autocatalysts, ceramic substrates, and specialty materials
incorporated into the catalytic converter and filter- and catalyst-based technologies to control engine
emissions (especially particulates and nitrogen oxides). Members’ technology is incorporated in the ex-
haust emissions control systems of all new cars, commercial vehicles, buses, non-road mobile machinery

CLEPA, the association of the automotive suppliers’ industry in Europe, represents over 3.000 compa-
nies supplying state-of-the-art components and innovative technology for safe, smart and sustainable
mobility, investing over 30 billion euros yearly in research and development and employing overall nearly
five million people across the continent.
CO2 Value Europe is the industry-driven European Association which is committed to coordinate and
represent the CO2 Utilisation community in Europe and to build up an integrated vision and action plan
to develop CO2 Utilisation into a new industrial sector making a significant contribution to Europe’s low
carbon economy.
EBA is the voice of renewable gas in Europe. Founded in February 2009, the association is committed
to the active promotion of the deployment of sustainable biogas and biomethane production and use
throughout the continent. EBA counts today on a well established network of over 100 national organi-
sations, scientific institutes and companies from Europe and beyond.
The
eFuel Alliance is an interest group committed to promoting the political and social acceptance of
eFuels and to securing their regulatory approval. We represent more than 110 companies along the
value chain of the eFuel production. We stand for fair competition and a level-playing field for all rele-
vant emission reduction solutions. We are clearly committed to more climate protection and aim to win
broader recognition of the significant contribution eFuels can make in the drive for sustainability and cli-
mate protection. Our goal is to facilitate the industrial production and widespread use of carbon neutral
fuels made from renewable energy sources.
The
European renewable ethanol association (ePURE) represents the interests of European renewable
ethanol producers. Based in Brussels, ePURE speaks for 36 member companies and associations (includ-
ing 19 producers) accounting for about 85% of the renewable ethanol production in Europe and 50,000
direct and indirect jobs.
The
European Waste Advanced Biofuels Association (EWABA) is a Brussels-based association promot-
ing the inclusion of waste-based biofuels in the EU fuel mix as a sustainable means of reducing green-
house gas emissions in EU transport. Our +30 members active in most EU Member States collect and
use waste feedstocks listed in parts A and B of Annex IX of the Renewable Energy Directive (REDII), to
produce sustainable biodiesel with the highest GHG savings (up to +90%) when compared with fossil
fuels, thus enabling “near-term decarbonization” of the EU road and maritime transport sectors.
FuelsEurope is the Association of the European refining & marketing industry. As an industry, we collect
over €270 billion in tax revenues annually for member states, employ 140.000 people directly, and 1.3
million people along the broader supply chain.
IRU is the International Road Transport Union, founded 70 years ago in Geneva to facilitate trade,
international road transport and passenger mobility, and to support sustainable development worldwide.
We have been driving economic growth in more than 100 countries, upholding the interests of all road
transport operators by finding increasingly efficient ways to connect societies. We enjoy long-standing
partnerships with the United Nations, the European Union and Eurasian institutions, giving us the insight
needed to drive progress in the road transport industry. Today, we connect societies with safe, efficient,
green mobility and logistics. Road transport is the lifeblood of global trade and a critical link to unlocking
international opportunity and prosperity. The sector accounts for 5.7% of employment worldwide; in
Europe alone, providing five million jobs and driving a total revenue of €500 billion.
The Methanol Institute (MI) is the global trade association for the methanol industry, representing the
world’s leading producers, distributors, and technology companies. Founded in 1989 in Washington, DC,
MI now represents its members from five offices around the world in Washington, DC, Beijing, Brussels,
Delhi, and Singapore. MI serves as the voice of the methanol industry, representing companies within
the membership to governments and businesses around the world to promote the sustainable growth of
the industry. MI focuses on advancing the utilization of methanol as a clean fuel in energy-related appli-
cations such as (non)road & maritime transport, power generation, fuel cells, industrial boilers, and cook
stoves. MI also supports the development of sustainable and renewable processes to produce methanol
as a net climate neutral chemical and fuel.
The Natural & bio Gas Vehicle Association (NGVA Europe) is the European association that promotes
the use of natural and renewable gas as a transport fuel. Founded in 2008, its 124 members from 27+4
countries include companies and national associations from across the entire gas and vehicle manufac-
turing chain. NGVA Europe is a platform for the industry involved in producing and distributing vehicles
and natural gas, including component manufacturers, gas suppliers and gas distributors. It defends their
interests to European decision-makers to create accurate standards, fair regulations and equal market
conditions.
The
Association of the German Biofuel Industry (Verband der Deutschen Biokraftstoffindustrie e. V.
- VDB) represents the interests of 15 biofuel producers in Germany with a production capacity of 2.3
million tons of biodiesel and 900 GWh of biomethane. The production of biofuels in Germany creates and
maintains more than 20,000 jobs in the value chain. The industry turns over more than 3 billion euros per
year.
With around 3,300 members, the
VDMA is the largest network organisation and an important voice for
the mechanical engineering industry in Germany and Europe.
UPEI represents nearly 2,000 European importers and wholesale/retail distributors of energy for the
transport and heating sectors, supplying Europe’s customers independently of the major oil companies
and energy producers. They are the interface between producers and consumers, using their own infra-
structure and flexibility to supply conventional and renewable liquid fuels, as well as non-liquid alterna-
tives as part of the energy transition. UPEI members cover more than a third of Europe’s current demand
and employ around 84,000 people across Europe.
