MAS service for Italy and Malta
Dear European Border and Coast Guard Agency,
Through its Multipurpose Aerial Surveillance (MAS) service launched on 8 June 2017, Frontex aims to support EU Member States through improved situational awareness and reactivity in the EU and the pre-border area. Multi-purpose aerial surveillance (MAS) is a service provided under the Eurosur Fusion Services (EFS).
As of 2019, Frontex has expanded MAS to become a 24/7 service. All surveillance footage is transmitted in real time to Frontex's European monitoring team in Warsaw or to the coordination centres in Vigo, Lisbon and Rome.
The objective of MAS is to provide a real-time surveillance service to Member States by contributing to the situational picture at the EU borders and pre-frontier areas. The activation of the surveillance service is done at the request of Member States.
Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting the following information relating to the above-mentioned MAS service:
A comprehensive list of the requests made to Frontex by Italian and Maltese authorities regarding the activation of aerial surveillance (MAS) in the Central Mediterranean from 2017 to December 2021 - with specific reference year indications for each request made.
