Dear Filip, dear Gaëlle,
Confidentially, I wanted to share with you initial elements of the
Destination 2050
initiative. You will find them at the following link which has been made available
temporarily for you before its actual publication on Thursday. As it is still work in
progress, I will ask you not to share further.
As you know, the aviation industry is experiencing its worst crisis in modern history due
to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, as led by the EC, efforts to make Europe the world’s first
CO2 neutral continent by 2050 are only accelerating. This includes the decarbonization
of European aviation.
Acknowledging its responsibilities, the aviation sector has worked for the past 1,5 years
on a flagship sustainability initiative, “
Destination 2050 – A route to net zero European
aviation”. It is driven by a new, independent report by the Dutch research consortium
NLR/SEO which provides a path for meaningful CO2 emission reduction efforts from air
transport. In an unprecedented move, leaders of Europe’s aircraft, aerospace
manufacturers, airlines, airports and air navigation service providers will present this
week their joint long-term vision and announce concrete industry commitments and the
actions required from policy makers to support the 2030 and 2050 climate goals.
What are these commitments?
· Reaching
net zero CO2 emissions by 2050 from all flights within and departing
from the EU. This means that by 2050, emissions from these flights will be reduced
as much as possible,
with any residual emissions being removed from the
atmosphere through negative emissions achieved through natural carbon sinks
(e.g., forests)
or dedicated technologies (carbon capture and storage).
· Reducing net CO2 emissions from all flights within and departing from the
EU by 45%
by 2030 compared to the baseline. In 2030, net CO2 emissions from intra-EU flights
would be reduced by
55% compared to 1990 levels.
· Assessing the feasibility of making
2019 the peak year for absolute CO2 emissions
from flights within and departing from the EU.
In the current crisis the industry is finding itself, the strategic significance of such
commitments cannot be underestimated. It is the result of long (and should I say
difficult) discussions in the industry.
Yet, this is the sector’s best response and contribution to the European Green Deal. The
task and efforts needed to make this vision and reality are huge. There will be winners
and there will be losers in the industry, in Europe and abroad. It will require investments,
cooperation and legislations in ETS/CORSIA, SAFs, airspace, Hydrogen, aircrafts
technology, just to name a few. Governments, the EU and ICAO have a big role to play to.
It is this contribution from policy-makers we will seek to turn into action under a planned
EU Pact for Sustainable Aviation put in place an enabling regulatory and financial
framework for these commitments.
Pending the publication on 11 February, I hope this gives you at this stage enough
material to be convinced of the importance for Ms Valean to join Mr Canfin, Mr
Marinescu, the PT Presidency of the Council and the industry CEOs on 25 February.

All materials are embargoed until our launch on 11 Feb. at 09:00 CET.
In the meantime, please don’t hesitate if you have any questions.
Best,

Dear Filip, dear Gaëlle,
As discussed earlier on the phone, I wanted to explore with you how to best involve
yourselves and the Commissioner on the “Destination 2050 - A Route to Net Zero
European Aviation” project, which the European aviation industry (airlines,
manufacturers, airports and traffic controllers) are launching this month. Destination
2050 is the European aviation’s response to the Green Deal and our joint contribution to
the European climate effort.
A media launch has been planned for
11 February. It will be followed by a policy event
