Subject: Call with thyssenkrupp Steel 13 April 2021
Dear Mr Canton,
Dear
Thank you very much for the fruitful meeting earlier this week.
Attached please find a short schematic overview of our transformation
roadmap towards climate neutrality by 2050. It illustrates our path to step
by step replace coal-based blast furnaces with hydrogen-based direct
reduction plants. This includes several projects which we will feed into the
Commission’s project pipeline under the Clean Hydrogen Alliance. We put
forward a proposal under the H2 IPCEI programme and very much hope to
be included in the upcoming matchmaking process.
As mentioned, our successful transformation depends on enabling EU
regulation, financial support and prioritized access to clean hydrogen. Steel
has the greatest "hydrogen exchange rate" of all industrial sectors (1 t H2
avoids 26 t CO2) and we have no alternative but hydrogen to decarbonize.
Thyssenkrupp Steel will be among the largest single users in Europe and
generate a demand of about 6 GW green electricity per year for which most
of the infrastructure still needs to be built.
The green transition of the steel industry is a long-term project. We
therefore hope that the Commission will allow state aid for OPEX and
support CCfDs for industrial transition projects.
We briefly touched upon the importance of an EU harmonized definition
for Green Steel.
will follow-up shortly with our respective
recommendations.
I remain at your and the Commissioner’s disposal and look forward to an
early opportunity to continue our dialogue.
Best regards,
