Title: Minutes of the meeting between HoCAB and Arla Board of Directors - 15/05/2023
Minutes of the meeting between HoCAB and Arla Board of Directors
Brussels, 15/05/2023
Participants from CAB: M. Golubiewski, A. Schneider
Participants from DG AGRI: 4.1(b)-privacy (E3)
HoCAB M. Golubiewski reported on topics of current relevant for the F2F, CAP Strategic Plans,
EU dairy sector and sustainability in agriculture. HoCAB presented the current situation of the
milk market and future perspectives. Food inflation, changes in consumer choices, food security,
EU support for farmers (2022-2023), shrinkflation, changes in the farm structures, challenges
(climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, covid-19, war in UA, high interest rates, lack of
labour), commitments of dairy companies to achieve net-zero GHG emissions, agri-food business
missions to third countries, IED, carbon farming and animal welfare measures in the CAP SP, eco
schemes, new technologies, precision farming were discussed.
Arla representatives raised the following issues:
• What are the remaining Commission objectives to be achieved between now and the end
of the mandate?
• How is carbon farming expected to develop in the coming 2-3 years?
• Are there any new proposals on animal welfare and origin labelling?
• Two corner stones: food production with lower environmental impact and exports.
• Isn't there a tension between Farm to Fork actions/targets and food security? They
mentioned the example of no bread for 3 days in FR.
• Global dairy prices declined by 30% and retail prices will follow; in September, we could
even experience deflation.
• Production costs and interest rates are high.
• Young farmers may have to choose between being a carbon farmer or a biodiversity farmer
or a dairy farmer.
• Arla farmers have reduced emissions and a new Sustainability Incentive Model will be made
available for them in the next 30 days.
• Arla believes that taxing cows, as discussed in NZ and DK, is not an appropriate measure.
