Commissioner Breton explained the preparatory work ongoing on the upcoming Media Freedom Act. 
MD underlined four areas that the MFA could useful y address: 
-  Ownership criteria to ensure that media are run by media professionals (e.g. in relation to 
political parties, oligarchs). 
-  Transparency of state advertising 
-  Protection of journalistic sources 
-  Gatekeepers market power affecting media independence in relation to moderating media 
content and copyright.   
The editorial independence and organisation of newsrooms is a sensitive issue for publishers and 
important MFA does not restrict running of the business.  He emphasised the importance of 
competition and a freedom of business. 
Commissioner Breton took note of suggestions and explained the overal  approach of the MFA. The 
idea is not to restrict business operations, but to protect information as public good and signal an 
aspiration model based on best practices that could be promoted across the Single Market.
